Zynga withdraws from the web3 initiative Sugartown

Zynga has decided to exit its web3 initiative, Sugartown, by selling the project to a new entity named D20.

This development was revealed through an announcement by D20 on social media, stating the acquisition of all Sugartown-related products and assets from Zynga.

D20 was established by Matt Wolf, who was previously Zynga's VP of web3 gaming, and Tommy Ngo, who served as the general manager for web3 at the company. As reported by Pocket Gamer, a social media post by a team member clarified that "D20 is fully comprised of the members of the ex-Zynga web3 team."

Zynga unveiled Sugartown in 2023, marking its debut venture into blockchain-based gaming following the hiring of Wolf in 2021 for a role focused on blockchain gaming. This was prior to Zynga's acquisition by Take-Two Interactive in January 2022.

GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to Zynga to gain further insights regarding its decision to sell Sugartown.

A pig is seen from the back in a dark room lit by a laptop screen with programming windows open on it. The pig holds a postcard in his hands that says 'Welcome to Sugartown, where life is sweet!' An open bag of pork rinds rests on the table next to the laptop.
