nDreams has announced potential layoffs that could impact up to 17.5% of its workforce.

CEO Patrick O'Luanaigh communicated to GamesIndustry.biz that despite trying various approaches to avoid layoffs, the company's shift in strategy may lead to job losses affecting up to 17.5% of employees.

The studio's LinkedIn profile indicates a staff size ranging from 201 to 500, which suggests that between 35 and 88 positions could be compromised at every level within the organization.

Addressing the workforce, O'Luanaigh revealed a renewed strategic direction that might result in significant job reductions.

"Over several challenging months in the VR gaming sector amid broader industry struggles, we considered numerous strategies to avoid this outcome. However, unfortunately, we now face losing valuable team members, potentially including among senior ranks.

"We are devoted to providing support and assistance for affected staff, working diligently to either retain roles within nDreams or aid transitions to new opportunities elsewhere," the statement elaborates.

nDreams, a VR-focused developer since 2013, has navigated many hurdles to become a leading independent studio in virtual reality gaming. Although these decisions regarding staff are deeply painful, the company's confidence in the potential of XR gaming remains strong. The new organizational structure aims to enhance service to both existing and future gaming audiences by producing groundbreaking VR titles.

"Currently, our main focus is on assisting our employees throughout this transition as we shape a new path forward," the statement concludes.

This development contributes to the tally of nearly 13,000 jobs lost within the gaming industry in 2024.
