Google has stopped supporting the VR project for drawing Tilt Brush - now its code is in the public domain
While Apple is investing in virtual reality, Google is shutting down VR services. The company has announced that it will no longer officially support the Tilt Brush 3D drawing application. From now on, its source can be found on GitHub.
The Google team shared this news on their blog. The company did not say why it decided to abandon Tilt Brush. But she noted that despite her departure from the project, the application will still be able to work.
The repository with the application data on GitHub is now archived, i.e., there are no active developments on it. Therefore, users will not be able to connect to the project and change something inside it. However, according to Google, developers will be able to use the open source Tilt Brush if they comply with the Apache 2.0 license.
But in order to open the code, the company had to sacrifice some Tilt Brush functions due to licensing restrictions. Nevertheless, Google left instructions on how to fix everything back. The company also stated that the code from the “box” is able to compile a working version of Tilt Brush, after which a special SDK will need to be added to it.
Finally, Google added that the VR project will always be available in digital stores for users with supported headsets. Recall that Tilt Brush now works on Oculus, HTC Vive, Valve Index, Windows MR and PlayStation VR helmets.
Tilt Brush was launched back in 2016. During this time, the application has managed to receive many awards, including at the Unity Awards and Cannes Lions ceremonies.
