Facebook has stopped supporting the Gear VR helmet
Users have nothing more to expect from Samsung Gear VR. Facebook will stop updating headset software. In addition, from September 15, the Oculus Store will not appruvit new applications for Gear VR.
As Oculus clarified, the helmet owners are waiting for the following changes:
- From April 30, the Oculus Video application will disappear from the store. Users who have already downloaded it will no longer be able to purchase movies for it. They will receive compensation from the Oculus Store, equivalent to the cost of all purchased titles;
- From May 30, Gear VR will no longer support Oculus 360 Photos;
- From September 15, Oculus will stop functional support for Gear VR and the publication of new applications for the mobile headset;
- The popular browser from Oculus will still be available, but without updates (including security algorithms) and fresh recommendations.
Such a move by the company is not surprising. Both she and Samsung are gradually cutting back on the Gear VR functionality. Last year, the smartphone manufacturer did not add helmet support to the recently released Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S20. Later, the authors of the Oculus SDK abandoned the headset.
Samsung Gear VR was released in 2014. It is designed only to work with the Galaxy line of devices. Since Samsung abandoned this project, we can talk about the complete decline of the mobile virtual reality segment.
Another similar platform, Google‘s Daydream View for Android devices, disappeared from sale in October. The latest Google smartphones no longer support it.
