The Cave will be released on the App Store on October 4
The latest console game by Ron Gilbert, author of Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island, will be released on iOS this Thursday.
The Cave was created within the walls of Double Fine, the studio of the legendary Tim Schafer. After its release in January of this year, Gilbert unexpectedly left the company to join the miniature studio Beep Games, founded by Clayton Kauzlaric, with whom Ron worked together on Total Annihilation and DeathSpank.
In turn, The Cave, which the gaming press praised for the plot, but scolded for the tedious gameplay, remained in the hands of Double Fine. And with the support of Sega, the company decided to port Gilbert’s “swan song” to a mobile platform.
Estimate the size of the levelsWhy, however, is not entirely clear.
The Cave has never become a big brand. The gameplay was originally designed far from mobile platforms (huge levels need to be carefully studied, as well as run from one end to the other a dozen times). The controls may have been redone (everything is now based on swipes), but constantly dragging your finger across the screen to move around is also not the best approach to the UI.
On the other hand, the game is beautiful, three-dimensional. And as we were told, these are the games Apple likes to feature. It is necessary for users to show why they bought the latest version of the iOS device (in the sense that 3D without brakes, beautiful effects and the presence of “mimics”, of course).
The cost of The Cave for both iPhone and iPad users will be $4.99.
