Sony Report: PlayStation profits nearly doubled, while sales of Marvel’s Wolverine reached 2.4 million copies
The Sony Corporation reported a successful second quarter of fiscal 2026, which spanned from July 1 to September 30. Its gaming division managed to increase many key metrics, with some showing significant growth.
Marvel’s Wolverine
- Compared to last year, the operating profit of PlayStation surged by 83% to 220.1 billion yen ($1.4 billion).
- Sony attributed this jump primarily to a low base in 2025, when it lost hundreds of millions of dollars due to the impairment of Bungie’s assets and adjustments to previously capitalized development costs.
- PlayStation revenue grew less dramatically, rising by 9% to 1.2 trillion yen ($7.6 billion).
- More than half of the revenue was generated by game sales—708.5 billion yen ($4.5 billion, +12.6%). Revenue from physical editions amounted to only 43.1 billion yen ($273 million, +21.7%).
- Revenue from console and other gaming hardware sales continued to decline. This time it amounted to 219.7 billion yen ($1.4 billion, -5%). However, revenue from Sony’s gaming services reached 218.3 billion yen ($1.38 billion, +19.4%).
- In total, Sony sold 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles during the quarter, which is 1.4 million units less than in July-September 2025. Consequently, total sales of the console have reached 97.9 million units.
- Quarterly sales of games for PlayStation 4 and 5 totaled 88.2 million copies. Of these, 8.2 million copies were Sony’s own titles.
- Sony also boasted the success of Marvel’s Wolverine in the report. The company announced that by November 4, “Wolverine” sold 2.4 million copies worldwide. The game needed just under two months to achieve this, having been released on September 15.
