The CEO of Epic Games has described Steam's AI disclosure policies as "a political act"
Tim Sweeney, who leads Epic Games, has launched a critique against Steam's AI transparency requirement, labeling it "a political act."
His comments came after a tweet criticized Valve's AI policy as "absurd." Sweeney echoed this sentiment, stating in his reply that forcing developers to make political declarations, potentially used against them, was "abhorrent."
Further elaborating in another tweet, he asserted that these disclosures serve primarily to fuel cancel campaigns against games, restricting their success unless they conform to certain political ideals. He challenged whether developers should be compelled to reveal their political affiliations and questioned the overall impact on the gaming community.
Sweeney, in a separate communication, argued that these AI disclosures are similarly partisan, likening them to obligatory political statements meant to spur public dissent. He also pointed out that Epic Games maintains a transparent approach about their AI usage.
He has been vocal on this issue before, advocating for the cessation of AI labels on gaming platforms and claiming that AI's role in game development should not influence a game's reception.
His criticism of Valve dates back to June, when he condemned their AI disclosure labels on Steam as "irresponsible." He remarked on the adverse effect such policies have on game developers, placing them at a disadvantage if they choose productivity-enhancing tools that competitors might exploit. Sweeney suggested that this policy could hinder developers' chances for success.
