According to a report, Sony is consulting developers about potentially eliminating disc support for PlayStation

Reports indicate that Sony Interactive Entertainment is conducting a comprehensive survey among game developers about its decision to phase out support for physical discs on PlayStation.

The YouTube channel Moore's Law is Dead revealed that the survey is extensive, aiming to gauge developer opinions on discontinuing physical game media.

Tom, the host from Moore's Law is Dead, stated, as per Eurogamer, that, "Sony sent out a substantial survey to developers, possibly the largest they've ever distributed," focusing in part on how this change impacts physical game sales.

In July, it was announced that PlayStation plans to halt disc production by January 2028, adapting to the growing preference for digital formats.

Sony Interactive Entertainment explained this move as aligning with consumer trends, as digital purchases have become dominant.

Statistics from Game File show that 80% of PlayStation 4 and 5 games in the last year were bought digitally.

Despite the shift in consumer habits, some gaming companies have expressed their objections. Collector's edition specialist Iam8bit conveyed strong disappointment to GamesIndustry.biz, while Lost in Cult shared similar sentiments.

Additionally, Michael Yum from PM Studios described the transition as "sad and devastating," underscoring the emotional impact on those still valuing physical media.
