According to reports, PlayStation reportedly had reservations regarding the budget, potential profitability, and exclusivity of Kojima Productions' project titled Physint
Reports indicate that PlayStation ceased its collaboration with Kojima Productions on the project known as Physint. The decision stemmed from "budget concerns, doubts about potential profitability, and issues with keeping the game exclusive."
According to insiders who spoke to Bloomberg, Physint, introduced in 2024, was behind schedule and projected to exceed its budget significantly, although it was still years from completion.
Moreover, previous titles like Death Stranding and its follow-up, On the Beach, fell short of the revenue benchmarks PlayStation had set.
Given these outcomes, PlayStation showed hesitancy in committing extensive financial resources on another timed exclusive from Kojima Productions.
Initially, Death Stranding was a PlayStation exclusive upon its November 2019 release. It eventually made its way to PC by July 2020 and later debuted on Xbox and Amazon Luna in November 2024.
The sequel similarly followed a timed-exclusive format, debuting in June 2025 and arriving on PC by March 2026.
On the preceding Thursday, Hideo Kojima revealed that Kojima Productions had unexpectedly been notified by PlayStation of their decision to cancel Physint in mid-June.
PlayStation commented separately, expressing it was a "difficult decision to end its work with Kojima Productions" on Physint, though it affirmed that the bond with the studio "remains robust" and they anticipate "future collaborations."
Following this, Kojima Productions aligned with Xbox as a new partner for Physint. The studio had already been collaborating with Xbox on another project, a horror game known as OD.
"Creators have opportunities to decide the platforms and methods they use to execute their creative visions," said Sharma. "We are privileged that Kojima-san has opted to collaborate with Xbox for Kojima Productions' Physint. His drive to push creative frontiers aligns with the type of innovation we encourage at Xbox."
Kojima remarked, "This partnership strengthens our alliance with Xbox beyond OD. As we advance with Physint's development, we are poised to redefine the action-espionage gaming experience globally."
