Strategies, simulators, and a new Steam record: the top-grossing releases of August in numbers and charts
While the console market is holding its breath for the annual sports lineup and a torrent of fall releases, a few dozen commercially successful titles were released on PC in August. More details can be found in our traditional section filled with numerous data and charts.
Games discussed in this article:
- Revenue, sales, and other metrics of the biggest August releases: Star Wars Zero Company, Big Walk, Mortal Shell II, MARVEL Tōkon, among others;
- Data on indie hits and notable newcomers: How to Fish, ReStory, Sandustry, Iron Nest, and more;
- The best-selling and top-grossing releases of 2026 on PC and consoles so far: updated data on Resident Evil Requiem, Pokémon Pokopia, Slay the Spire 2, 007 First Light, and many other hits.
To evaluate sales, revenue, and other metrics, we relied not only on official data from developers and publishers but also on information from third-party sources. These include Steam charts as well as data from analytical companies like Gamalytic, GameDiscoverCo, and Sensor Tower (VG Insights). All numbers presented in the article cover the period from the release date of a specific game up to August 31, 2026.
Last month, 2,685 new titles launched on Steam, which is a 49% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Of these, 504 (18.7%) are games with profile features enabled (cards, badges, etc.) that surpassed a certain minimum threshold for revenue and user base.
2,685 games represent yet another record for the number of releases in a single month in Steam's history. The previous was set just in July 2026.
- All August releases collectively garnered more than $212 million.
- 120 titles earned over $100,000, and the gross revenue of 23 projects (0.85%) exceeded $1 million — within the normal range.
- 25 releases sold more than 100,000 copies, while over 150 exceeded at least 10,000 copies.
- Out of all new releases in August, 352 received more than 100 reviews, and 66 projects surpassed the 1,000 review mark.
Next, we will look at the performance of major releases and supplement this information with data on the console market in the United Kingdom (GfK) and Japan (Famitsu).
