Later this month, Xbox will offer Insiders the opportunity to convert physical game discs into digital entitlements

Starting August 31, Xbox Insiders can begin experimenting with a new feature that allows owners of certain physical games to access a digital version of those titles. This initiative lets players insert supported game discs into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and unlock a digital copy.

As detailed on Xbox Wire, the program supports most Xbox One and Xbox Series X games that come on disc. Jason Ronald, Vice President of Next Generation at Xbox, commented on the effort as part of an ongoing commitment to preserve gaming experiences. "With changes in technology, devices, and distribution methods, ensuring continued access to purchased games has never been more critical," he stated.

Once a digital version is unlocked, players can potentially use Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming features with the digital copy, without affecting the disc's usability. Each game disc can only yield one revokable digital license, and while thousands of titles are included initially, more will be added over time. Nonetheless, not every game will be supported from the start.

This development comes shortly after Sharma alerted Xbox employees that the division's financial performance was troubling. Coinciding with recent strategic shifts, the company announced a restructuring that includes divesting five studios—Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, and Arkane—and cutting approximately 3,200 jobs.

The move also follows Sony's announcement to phase out physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. After this date, all new games will be sold exclusively in digital format, although discs already released will remain unaffected.

There remains some uncertainty regarding the participation of publishers and retailers in this program and whether it will encompass third-party games or just those published by Xbox.
