Xbox plans to enable Insiders to transform physical game discs into digital entitlements by the end of this month
Starting August 31, Xbox Insiders will have the opportunity to trial a new feature allowing them to transform supported physical game discs into digital versions. This was shared via Xbox Wire. Users can simply insert a compatible disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X system to activate the digital version, with a majority of Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games being eligible.
According to Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox, this initiative is part of enhancing game preservation as technology and distribution channels continue to change. "Preserving access to the games people own is becoming increasingly vital," Ronald stated.
Once unlocked, Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming features will be available for the digital copy, if supported. The original disc remains usable as before, but only a single revocable digital license can be authorized per disc. Initially, Xbox will provide this service for "thousands of titles," but more will be integrated over time, though not every game will be offered at first.
This announcement follows remark made by Sharma about Xbox's business health and the company’s recent divestment of five studios: Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, and Arkane, which coincided with a reduction of approximately 3,200 positions.
In comparison, Sony declared last month its plans to end the production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting January 2028, shifting entirely to digital sales for future releases post that date. Existing disc titles will not experience any changes.
Details about the involvement of publishers and retailers in this Xbox initiative remain ambiguous, particularly concerning whether third-party as well as first-party games will be included in this feature.
