Double Fine Productions has regained the intellectual property and publishing rights after its separation from Xbox
After separating from Xbox, Double Fine Productions has regained control over its intellectual property and publishing rights.
CEO Tim Schafer, while speaking on the Kinda Funny Games podcast as reported by Kotaku, mentioned that although some of their games still indicate 'Microsoft,' it is just a matter of time until full transition occurs. Purchases of their games contribute directly to supporting the studio.
The department, along with Compulsion Games, demerged from Xbox Game Studios shortly after layoffs impacted 3,200 employees recently.
Compulsion Games established their independence from Xbox last week. CEO Guillaume Provost highlighted the team's unwillingness to be divided.
Following its move from Microsoft, Double Fine revealed the fifth Amnesia Fortnight initiative.
Employees annually collaborate in two-week sessions to create game prototypes, with some evolving into complete games, such as Kiln.
This year’s theme, 'Amnesia Fortnight 2026 – Indie Reboot,' is set to begin on August 31.
During a live Game Jam, supporters can vote on which concepts will develop into four prototypes, eventually determining which of those will be transformed into a full-fledged smaller game.
According to the studio, while 2 Player Productions captures the event's excitement, the aim is to secure a Kickstarter campaign to offer financial stability post-separation, enabling focus on new projects.
In the past month, Double Fine cut 23 roles post-separation from Xbox.
Schafer conveyed that such measures are considered only under circumstances crucial for the studio's survival, reflecting the tight-knit nature of their team.
