Compulsion Games has formally parted ways with Xbox. A team member stated, "The team told me we would rather eat rocks and drink gasoline than be split up"
Compulsion Games has successfully separated from Xbox, with the leadership team now owning the studio and its employees.
CEO Guillaume Provost expressed his primary motivation was the well-being of the team. When asked if they wished to continue working together, the team reportedly preferred remaining unified above all else, Provost revealed in an interview with GamesBeat.
Although Provost did not share the exact number of the current workforce, it's noted that some departures occurred following his warning of potential closure prior to Xbox's decision to separate the studio, highlighted by a 20% reduction in Xbox's workforce.
Provost appreciated Microsoft for a considerate transition, noting that maintaining employment for the team was vital. He added, "Challenging periods bring about change and prospects for new ventures, allowing companies to establish strong foundations."
The reacquisition of its intellectual properties is a highlight for Compulsion Games, reclaiming titles like 2013’s "Contrast," 2018’s "We Happy Few," and the future release "South of Midnight".
Provost elucidated that publishing rights will gradually revert to the studio with different platform holders over a transition phase. Supporting the studio by purchasing its games is crucial during this period of adjustment.
Towards a sustainable future, Provost is meeting potential partners to secure long-term financial stability and is assessing various options for ongoing funding, reported GamesBeat.
Compulsion Games is focused on self-reliance, welcoming collaborations with other developers and intellectual property holders. Provost emphasized on setting up the team to thrive, indicating a measured planning approach. "Ensuring the team aligns its objectives with running a profitable business is the key to our success," he concluded.
