Sony plans to shut down the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita by July 2027

Sony has announced it will be shutting down the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices.

According to a statement from Sony, the store will cease operations in specific regions such as Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, and several other Latin American and Middle Eastern countries later this year, with a worldwide closure set for July 2027. This will halt new purchases of content for users on these platforms.

Sony stated, "As the PlayStation Store evolves to incorporate modern commerce needs, including the latest payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita cannot keep pace with these upgrades, necessitating the store closure."

The company further commented, "We understand this decision might be disappointing for PS3 and PS Vita enthusiasts who fondly remember this gaming period. These consoles played a pivotal role in our history, and this choice was not made lightly."

The PS3 made its debut in the US in 2006, reaching Europe in 2007, before being discontinued in 2016. The PS Vita was released in both the US and Europe in 2012, with its production halting in 2019.

Moreover, earlier today, Sony revealed it plans to cease the production of physical discs for new games on PlayStation consoles starting January 2028, hinting that future consoles may come without disc drives.

A recent report also suggests that Xbox is contemplating a similar move to phase out disc drives amid tests for a feature that allows users to digitize their physical game collections.
