According to reports, Xbox is exploring the possibility of eliminating disc drives as it experiments with a new feature that allows players to convert physical games into digital format

According to recent information, Xbox is reportedly planning to eliminate the disc drive, following in the footsteps of PlayStation.
Today, it was revealed that Sony intends to stop using physical discs for new titles on PS consoles starting in January 2028, suggesting that their forthcoming device might not include a disc drive.
Reports from Windows Central indicate that Microsoft's upcoming console, referred to as Project Helix, may also lack a disc drive.
In addition, The Verge cited rumors from earlier this year that Xbox has experimented with a feature to convert physical game collections into digital ones, allowing them to be used on devices without disc drives.
These discs are expected to remain functional after conversion, but the availability of the digital version could be rescinded if the disc is lent or sold. The full details of this feature are still being determined.
It appears this capability would only cover specific Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S titles, meaning certain original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles might not be accessible.
Both Xbox and PlayStation have previously launched consoles that are digital-only to cut costs. Furthermore, last year, Nintendo introduced Game-Key Cards, which are physical but only provide downloadable versions of certain games.
Rockstar has also disclosed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be available exclusively as a download starting this November.
