Sony will stop producing PlayStation discs starting in 2028
The end of the era of physical game editions is drawing closer. Sony announced that starting from January 2028, it will no longer release discs for new titles on PlayStation consoles.

The corporation explained this move as an “adaptation to consumer trends.” The fact is that most gamers now prefer to purchase digital versions of games rather than discs, so Sony has decided not to resist this trend and to cease production.
At the same time, Sony stated that even after discontinuing disc printing, it will continue to sell games in retail stores. How this will happen was not clarified, but it likely involves selling cards or boxes with codes.
Indeed, Sony has been experiencing a decline in physical game sales for some time. In May, the corporation reported that in the last financial year, only 22% of sold game copies for PlayStation consoles were on discs, compared to 49% six years ago and 73% nine years ago. Given that similar trends are observed with other companies, it is possible that they might adopt similar decisions over time.
