In May, PlayStation 5 experienced a significant decline in sales in the U.S., dropping 58% compared to the previous year, marking the lowest sales in May since 2000. On the other hand, Xbox saw a 12% decrease in sales, hitting record lows for the month.

The price of PlayStation 5 increased in April, with the standard edition now priced at $649.99, reflecting a $100 hike, and the PS5 Pro rising by $150 to $899.99. Despite these challenges for Sony and Microsoft, overall spending on gaming hardware in the U.S. increased by 38% year-over-year, totaling $249 million in May. This surge was largely driven by the Switch 2, which ranks as the second fastest-selling gaming console in the U.S. since records began in 1995, following the Game Boy Advance. The Switch 2 boasts an installed base of 5.9 million units in the U.S.

Total U.S. video game expenditure for May rose 3% year-over-year to $4.2 billion, while the spending from the start of the year reached $23 billion, reflecting a 4% increase from the previous year.

Leading game sales, 007 First Light ranks as the fourth top-selling game of 2026 in the U.S., surpassed only by Resident Evil: Requiem, Crimson Desert, and MLB: The Show 26, and just ahead of Forza Horizon 6.
