Asha Sharma, head of Xbox, advocates for a shift in focus from high-end gaming consoles to reducing the cost of production in the gaming industry.

In an interview with Fortune, she expressed skepticism about expecting gamers to invest heavily in new console generations.

Sharma stressed the importance of considering console production costs as well as forming strategic partnerships and developing new plans to enhance distribution and audience reach.

She added, "Exploring different business models is essential for console viability rather than just aiming for top-tier performance."

This follows a significant 33% drop in hardware revenue in the third quarter, a situation Sharma considered less than ideal.

In response, Xbox is reintroducing exclusive games, such as Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, specifically for their platform.

Sharma noted the importance of exclusive content in strengthening Xbox's position, stating, "Exclusives are a crucial component for platforms, and we're committed to gradually increasing our exclusive offerings as the company stabilizes."

Matthew Ball, chief strategy officer at Xbox, corroborated this perspective, articulating that the introduction of exclusive titles is pivotal for player retention and brand strength.

Addressing recent reductions in Game Pass pricing, Sharma noted the positive outcomes, including increased subscriber numbers and improved retention rates.

She concluded, "This summer, we aim to diversify our offerings to cater to diverse player preferences, and we're committed to continuous improvement in this area."
