A new studio, Twisted Works, has been established with experienced professionals from PlayStation London Studio, Disney Interactive, and Square Enix.

Twisted Works, set up in London last June, is guided by CEO and creative director James Brace, operations director Ciarán Daly, and characters director Etienne Jabbour.

Brace describes the studio's mission as one of developing innovative concepts and new intellectual properties in what he calls a "very-risk-averse market."

He elaborates, "We love bringing characters to life but maintain practicality. We evaluated the market and what we could realistically offer based on timing and resources."

Their initial project, titled Cast Outs, is a "modern fantasy co-op" game taking place in a fantastical version of London.

According to Eurogamer, there's a connection between Cast Outs and a previously in-progress co-op game by PlayStation London, evident in its concept art and setting.

Brace aspires for the game to showcase their ability to create a beloved and socially enjoyable property.

He remarked, "Sustainability over sheer numbers is key. If it's sustainable, we can continue expanding this universe, crafting stories, and evolving the game alongside the community."

The game is designed with scalability in mind, aiming for a dedicated, high-quality audience rather than a fleeting large user base.

In May 2024, PlayStation London ceased operations after more than 20 years, due to major layoffs at Sony Interactive Entertainment impacting 900 employees.

Europe's Firesprite and Guerilla Games, along with Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, and various PlayStation teams in the US, were also affected by cuts.

Former SIE president Jim Ryan attributed the restructuring to the "evolving economic landscape" and changes in product development and distribution.

Ryan retired from Sony in September 2023.
