Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has emerged as the top third-party release on Xbox Game Pass for 2025
The game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 marked the largest third-party debut on Xbox Game Pass this year.
According to Xbox Wire, this achievement was determined by "the number of unique users in the first 30 days of availability."
Guillaume Broche, the creative director at Sandfall Interactive, mentioned the pivotal role Xbox's support played in increasing the game's visibility before launch. Having the game accessible from day one on Game Pass significantly broadened its audience.
"The turn-based RPG genre has a dedicated following, but it often discourages those who prefer real-time action. Game Pass made it easier for players to try and experience it," Broche noted. "This allowed many curious players to start the game, explore Lumière, and find enjoyment, even if they initially had reservations."
Guy Richards, the director at ID@Xbox, stated: "From the outset, Sandfall's vision was evident, and it was clear they aimed to craft something exceptional, surpassing team expectations.
"Playing early builds revealed their compelling story, breathtaking visuals, and the innovative combination of JRPG elements with French cultural themes. It was an experience we knew Xbox players would be excited to discover."
As of October 8, Clair Obscur had sold five million copies globally. It also reached 3.3 million sales just 33 days post-release.
GamesIndustry.biz interviewed Sandfall Interactive and Kepler in May regarding the success of Clair Obscur.
The game recently received nominations for 12 awards in ten categories at The Game Awards.
Additionally, it clinched six honors at the Golden Joystick Awards, with Sandfall being awarded Studio of the Year.
