Valve's latest VR headset, the Steam Frame, is set to include compatibility with Android games
Valve has unveiled its latest wireless VR headset, the Steam Frame, which will be compatible with Android gaming applications.
In a conversation with The Verge (noted by Game Developer), Valve expressed its goal to streamline the gaming experience, stating that gamers should seamlessly download and play titles on Steam without distinguishing between Steam's and Android's native games.
The capability stems from Steam Frame's ability to utilize the existing Android APKs that facilitate the transfer of mobile games to Android-oriented platforms such as Meta Quest. To aid developers in this transition, Valve is initiating a Steam Frame developer kit program. Despite the differences between SteamOS and Android, the device will operate Android applications with its Qualcomm Snapdragon Arm-based chip without a need for conversion.
Jeremy Selan, a Valve engineer, highlighted that developers with experience in creating for Meta Quest and Android devices can easily adapt their APKs to Steam, enabling their games to function effortlessly on this new VR headset.
Earlier today, Valve introduced three new pieces of hardware: the updated Steam Frame VR headset and controllers, a refreshed Steam controller, and the next-generation Steam Machine.
These products will be available in regions currently supporting Steam Deck sales, such as the US, Canada, UK, Europe, and Australia, along with Komodo-supported areas like Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Final pricing and release dates are yet to be confirmed.
