Key Insights

Growth in Sony's G&NS division was spurred by higher sales in network services, especially PlayStation Plus, and increased game software revenues. The revenue from network services rose by 13.7% to ¥182.6 billion ($1.1 billion) compared to ¥160 billion ($1.03 billion) in the prior quarter.

The number of monthly active users on PS Plus slightly grew to 119 million, a 2.5% increase from the previous year. Overall gaming software revenue rose by 2.7% to ¥629.3 billion ($4 billion) from ¥612.3 billion ($3.9 billion) in Q2 of 2024. Physical game software revenue increased by 2.9%, reaching ¥35.3 billion ($228.7 million), while digital and add-on content saw a 1.6% rise to ¥568.1 billion ($3.68 billion).

In light of these trends, Sony revised its G&NS revenue forecast to ¥4.4 trillion ($28.5 billion), up from a previous estimate of ¥4.3 trillion ($27.8 billion). However, the operating income projection remains unchanged despite a decline during Q2, attributable to "impairment losses associated with a portion of Bungie’s intangible and other assets linked to Destiny 2."

Hardware revenue saw a 5.8% rise to ¥230.9 billion ($1.4 billion), up from ¥218.2 billion in the previous period. The PlayStation 5 achieved sales of 6.4 million units during the first half of the year, a slight increase from 6.2 million units during the same timeframe last year. Within the quarter, 3.9 million units were sold.

In terms of game sales, 80.3 million copies were sold in Q2, exceeding the 77.7 million from the second quarter of 2024. Out of these, 6.3 million were first-party titles, driven by the release of Ghost of Yōtei, which sold 3.3 million copies within 32 days of its launch.
