Ball X Pit is another indie hit on Steam this October. It sold 300,000 copies in its first week
The secret to success is a popular mobile mechanic plus roguelike meta.
The project is a mix of many proven mechanics.
The core gameplay, styled as a dungeon descent, resembles the mobile game Balls Bounce, where instead of balls, there are the hero's projectiles, and instead of numbered blocks, there are monsters. Additionally, there's temporary leveling up from Vampire Survivors, based on finding synergies.
Between runs, which always end with the hero's death, the player builds a village and gathers resources to spend on upgrading characters and abilities.
This is all crafted in a dark pixel art style, combining 2D and 3D graphics, reminiscent of the visual style of first-generation PlayStation games.
The game was developed by a small team of seven, led by Kenny Sun, a designer of numerous hyper-casual titles for iOS and Android. Devolver Digital published the game.
The release of Ball X Pit took place on October 15. By October 20, the game reached a peak online concurrent player count of 34,000, and its sales surpassed the 300,000 copies mark.
According to GameDiscoverCo, the game's demo was among the top 10 most popular at the summer Next Fest. As a result, the game amassed 88,000 wishlists.
Ball X Pit is one of the most successful indie launches this October. Previously, other notable successes included Escape from Duckov, which reached 500,000 sales, and Absolum, which sold 200,000 copies in a week.
