The breakout success Megabonk has surpassed sales of one million copies on Steam
Vedinad, the developer of the uniquely named game Megabonk, has revealed that over a million copies have been sold on Steam, demonstrating the continued demand for rogue-like survival games akin to Vampire Survivors.
Sharing the update on X, Vedinad reported the milestone was reached within a fortnight. Video Game Insights (VGI) suggests Megabonk has sold approximately 1.3 million units, with a peak of more than 117,000 concurrent players on Steam.
The game employs low-polygon visuals to create a 3D twist on the successful 2D title Vampire Survivors by Poncle. As noted by GamesIndustry.biz’s Marie Delassandri, who named it her 2022 game of the year, Megabonk features a quirky character lineup, including a skeleton on a skateboard sporting sunglasses, expanding on that successful formula.
This isn’t the first title to benefit from the burgeoning popularity sparked by Vampire Survivors. Another example, Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, which incorporates mining elements, has also fared well, selling approximately 1.2 million units according to VGI. Soulstone Survivors, exiting Early Access in June, has accrued about 123,000 active monthly players, with its creator Allan Smith working tireless days to capitalize on the Vampire Survivors trend.
Statistics from VGI reveal a significant overlap of 62.5% in players who own both Megabonk and Vampire Survivors. There’s also notable crossover with 63.2% overlapping with Warframe and 64.1% with Risk of Rain 2.
Currently, Megabonk is ranked fifth in Steam's best-selling games list, trailing EA Sports FC 26, and it maintains a "very positive" rating from over 19,000 user reviews.
This success is part of a pattern on Steam this year, where surprise hits like Schedule I, a drug-dealing simulator, surged to the top of the charts in March, and Peak sold 2 million copies in just over a week.
