Sony introduces a new app for PlayStation parental controls
Sony has introduced the PlayStation Family App, a specialized mobile application designed for parental controls, available on both Android and iOS.
The app was unveiled through a post on the PlayStation Blog dated September 10, 2025. It incorporates existing parental controls found on PS5 and PS4, such as age restrictions and playtime management, while adding new customizable options.
Through this app, parents can receive instant updates on their child's gaming sessions on PlayStation and decide whether to approve or reject restricted games and requests for additional gaming time with a simple tap.
The PlayStation Family App enables parents to impose daily playtime limits and manage expenditure by establishing monthly spending caps for PlayStation Store transactions.
The application also facilitates the management of content filters and social interactions, allowing parents to adjust privacy settings, manage social functionalities, and determine age-appropriate content through their mobile devices. Moreover, it provides age-based presets offering recommended settings based on a child's age group.
To give an overview of a child's gaming patterns, users of the app receive daily and weekly activity summaries for quick review.
The PlayStation Family App is now available for free in "most markets," though it requires iOS version 14 and Android 8 or newer.
Cory Gasaway, Sony Interactive Entertainment's VP of product management, stated in the blog post, "We’re excited to bring an easy way for parents to manage their children’s gaming directly from their mobile devices."
Gasaway added, "This is just the beginning with our new mobile app – we’ll plan to continue adding enhancements to PlayStation Family app to evolve the experience over time."
