In the United States, Grand Theft Auto 5 holds the record as the top-selling PlayStation game ever

Grand Theft Auto 5 ranks as the highest-selling PlayStation title in U.S. history, covering all PlayStation generations.

This insight comes from Mat Piscatella of Circana, shared in celebration of PlayStation's 30th anniversary on September 9, 2025. The milestone was marked by revealing the top 20 PlayStation games’ sales according to Circana’s retail tracking data.

The sales data comprised information from January 1995, which predates the North American release of the original PlayStation console, up to July 2025. It included both physical and digital sales figures.

Piscatella organized this dataset into two lists based on sales revenue and units sold.

Grand Theft Auto 5 secured the top position on both lists. According to Take-Two Interactive’s financial disclosures earlier in the year, the game had reached over 215 million global sales as of May 2025, with an additional five million units sold in just a few months earlier that year.

Following closely in the ranking for sales revenue are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) and Red Dead Redemption 2, with Call of Duty maintaining a strong presence with titles like Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Black Ops 6, and Black Ops - Cold War.

The Call of Duty franchise is notably dominant, accounting for more than half of the top 20 revenue-generating games, and a significant portion based on units sold. Apart from Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto, franchises such as Minecraft, Guitar Hero, and Marvel's Spider-Man also make appearances in the top revenue list.

When looking at the units sold, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) ranks fifth, with Minecraft, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas taking the next few spots. Noteworthy titles also include Rainbow Six: Siege, God of War (2018), The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, The Last of Us, and Marvel's Spider-Man.

The PlayStation initially launched on September 9, 1995, in North America. In honor of its 30th anniversary, Sony has organized a series of events and introduced a special anniversary collection of PS5 products.
