Grand Theft Auto 5 holds the record as the top-selling PlayStation title ever in the United States
In the United States, Grand Theft Auto 5 claims the title of the best-selling game on PlayStation across all its eras.
This was highlighted by Circana’s Mat Piscatella, who unveiled a list of the top 20 PlayStation games in honor of PlayStation's 30-year presence in the US as of September 9, 2025. This ranking was based on data from Circana's sales tracking.
The figures cover both digital and physical sales from January 1995 until July 2025, just before the PlayStation’s North American debut.
The list is split into two sections: games ranked by revenue and by the number of units sold.

Holding the top spot in both categories is Grand Theft Auto 5. As reported in Take-Two Interactive’s financial documentation earlier this year, by May 2025, the game had surpassed the 215 million mark in global sales, including an additional five million copies sold between February and May of that year.
In terms of revenue, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) follows in second and Red Dead Redemption 2 takes third. These are succeeded by multiple Call of Duty entries: Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Black Ops 6, and Black Ops - Cold War.
Call of Duty games represent over half of the top revenue list and nearly half for units sold. Besides Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto, franchises such as Minecraft, Guitar Hero, and Marvel’s Spider-Man feature in the revenue rankings.
Despite this, Minecraft takes the second spot in units sold, with Red Dead Redemption 2 third, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas occupying fourth.
Additional notable entries by units include Rainbow Six: Siege, God of War (2018), The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, The Last of Us, and Marvel’s Spider-Man.
PlayStation first entered the North American market on September 9, 1995. As a celebration of its 30th year, Sony has arranged numerous events, special activities, giveaways, and a limited-edition collection of PS5 merchandise.
