Steam users in the UK are now mandated by Valve to verify their age before accessing games with mature content. This update is in compliance with the UK Online Safety Act, as covered by VGC. The age verification process, which began on August 29, 2025, requires users to opt-in to browse mature content game pages and relevant community hubs on Steam.

In a detailed post on Steam Support, Valve clarified that users must authenticate their age by logging into their account and providing a valid credit card. Successful completion of this process allows users to include previously restricted mature content types within their store preferences.

Valve noted that storing a credit card on the account means the account is verified for age as long as the card remains linked. Valve explained that Ofcom, the UK’s independent regulator for online safety, considers credit card checks as an effective age assurance measure since obtaining a credit card requires being at least 18 years old.

This stored credit card acts as a deterrent to prevent the sharing of a single Steam account among individuals to bypass age verification requirements.

The UK Online Safety Act, effective from July 25, 2025, mandates that services accessible to UK users must ensure safety by design. This act requires more stringent protections for children compared to adults and demands transparency from service providers.

Video game companies must adhere to these regulations, indicating that Valve is among several companies implementing age checks for UK users. In line with this, Microsoft has begun adding age verification for Xbox users in the UK. While currently optional, from early 2026, proof of age will be essential for adult accounts to fully access features like voice chat and messaging.
