Researchers are concerned that a large number of AI-generated reviews on Steam could harm games
The number of AI-generated reviews on Steam is on the rise. This conclusion was reached by the experts at Copyleaks, a text verification service, after analyzing reviews in the Valve store.
During their research, specialists discovered a network of suspicious accounts on Steam that leave hundreds of similar reviews with signs of neural network content. One of these signs is the use of template phrases. As noted by Copyleaks, certain expressions appear much more frequently in AI reviews compared to those written by real people. For example, the phrase "confrontation with formidable foes" appears 682 times more often in AI-generated content.
Researchers also pointed out that AI-generated reviews usually lack mentions of the gamer's personal experiences or specific game details. Specificity, in general, is minimal in these reviews.
This caused concern at Copyleaks. Researchers worry that Steam might become flooded with AI reviews. In such a scenario, Steam's algorithms could end up driving more traffic to unscrupulous developers, and gamers might lose trust in game ratings.
Copyleaks urged Valve to pay attention to the situation and implement stricter rules on Steam.
