On July 18, Microsoft discontinued the sale and rental of TV shows and movies on Xbox and Windows platforms.

Both the Xbox and Windows support pages clarify this change by noting "Microsoft has ceased sales of new movie and TV content." Although the company didn't explain its decision, it ensured users that their existing purchases would remain accessible.

According to the FAQ, "Users can still access their previously acquired content on Windows and Xbox devices," and it was further noted that "Xbox users can play personal videos, and Windows users can maintain access to the downloading and playback features."

To offer other entertainment options, Microsoft recommends utilizing third-party apps like Amazon Prime and Apple TV.

In 2006, Xbox began delivering TV and movie content, introducing American gamers to digital content through Xbox Live on the Xbox 360's first anniversary. This move marked a significant endeavor as Xbox aimed to integrate entertainment within its gaming ecosystem.

Earlier this month, Microsoft's gaming division faced layoffs, impacting over 9,000 employees. This followed as reports of substantial job cuts emerged.
