A developer claims that Apple is removing its game from the App Store without providing "clear justification"

Italian indie developer Santa Ragione has expressed disappointment with Apple's decision to remove its game, Wheels of Aurelia, from the App Store. The studio asserts that the game continues to meet existing technical standards and remains fully operational.

In a statement on BlueSky, Santa Ragione conveyed, "We regretfully inform you that our award-winning narrative game, Wheels of Aurelia, will soon be taken down from Apple's App Store following Apple's latest decision to delist it."

Despite attempts to gain clarity and challenging Apple's decision through appeals, the studio has not received a specific rationale other than the policy aimed at removing apps considered 'obsolete' or 'outdated', despite the game's current compliance and functionality.

Wheels of Aurelia is a celebrated narrative game centered on a road trip across Italy in the 1970s, featuring a cast of diverse passengers.

Santa Ragione's statement also remarked that removing functional artistic works due to less frequent updates undervalues video games as cultural and artistic creations. Video games, similar to books, films, and music, represent complete creative expressions that shouldn't necessarily require constant updates barring the need for maintaining core function.

Santa Ragione further noted that forced updates impose a significant financial burden on smaller developers striving towards new projects.

Attention was drawn to the European Union's recent regulations affecting Apple, stemming from the Digital Markets Act, which have led to substantial App Store adjustments in the EU.

The statement added, "Apple's control over digital distribution is concerning, highlighting the necessity for diverse ecosystems. We appreciate the European Union's measures to curb monopolistic conduct, promoting equitable and diverse digital environments."

For those interested in experiencing Wheels of Aurelia, it remains free on the App Store temporarily, as the developers aim to allow as many users as possible to engage with the game before its removal.
