Analyst: Elden Ring Nightreign became the most successful new release of May on Steam, despite launching at the end of the month

The founder of the analytical service GameDiscoverCo, Simon Carless, has named the best-selling new releases on Steam for May. The leader in both gross revenue and number of copies sold was Elden Ring Nightreign—despite its release occurring on the 30th.

According to Carless's estimates, by the end of May, the Steam version of Elden Ring Nightreign had earned $30.9 million and sold 852,500 copies. Recall that the official sales of the game across all platforms after the first day of release amounted to 2 million copies.

The analyst suggests that over time, Elden Ring Nightreign’s revenue could exceed $100 million, and that's just on PC. With consoles accounted for, its income will be "much greater."

The second best-grossing new release of the month on Steam was DOOM: The Dark Ages, with May grossing revenue of $26.5 million. However, in terms of the number of copies sold in the Valve store, the shooter only secured third place after FANTASY LIFE i: The Girl Who Steals Time.

Among other successful May releases, RoadCraft deserves mention. This construction racing simulator by Saber Interactive ranked fourth in both charts, with its Steam revenue at $12.6 million and nearly 320,000 copies sold.

The only game that made it into the top ten in sales but did not enter the top ten in gross revenue was the action-roguelike Tower of Babel: Survivors of Chaos. According to GameDiscoverCo, by the end of May it had been purchased 109,000 times on Steam.

Separately, Carless compiled a ranking that included not only new releases but all games with the highest gross revenue on Steam by the end of May. The list was predictably topped by Counter-Strike 2 ($198.8 million), followed by Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ($63.2 million), Dota ($31.5 million), Elden Ring Nightreign ($30.9 million), The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered ($29.8 million), and Helldivers 2 ($28.3 million).
