Sales of Dwarf Fortress on Steam have exceeded one million copies
The publisher Kitfox Games has announced that the Steam version of Dwarf Fortress has sold over a million copies. The game reached this milestone approximately two and a half years after its release on the platform: Dwarf Fortress was released in Valve’s store on December 6, 2022.
Dwarf Fortress
Dwarf Fortress has been a significant success for its creators, brothers Zach and Tarn Adams. They began developing the game in the early 2000s and released its first free version in 2006—the classic Dwarf Fortress is still available for download from the project's official website. Years later, due to family circumstances, the developers decided to release a paid version of Dwarf Fortress, which included many improvements and started being distributed via Steam.
In the first day alone, Steam users purchased Dwarf Fortress 160,000 times, far exceeding Kitfox Games' expectations. Within six days, sales of the game reached 300,000 copies. By February 2023, they exceeded 600,000 copies, and by April 2024—800,000 copies.
According to estimates by VG Insights, Dwarf Fortress has grossed $19.9 million on Steam to date. This is the game's gross revenue, from which the store’s commission has not been deducted. The developers received less in hand.
