PlayStation has established a new first-party studio named Dark Outlaw Games

An experienced industry figure, Jason Blundell, is leading a fresh PlayStation first-party studio, Dark Outlaw Games, established by Sony.

In a conversation with journalist Jeff Gerstmann, Blundell, who is at the helm as studio head and director, shared that the team at Dark Outlaw has been quietly working on a project that remains under wraps. For more details, the interview can be watched here.

Blundell expressed his excitement, noting the rare opportunity Sony has provided to form a first-party studio, which he finds both humbling and thrilling.

Currently, Dark Outlaw is in a phase of assembling its team and maintaining a low-profile approach as it progresses with its game development.

Blundell, known for his programming background, emphasized the importance of team dynamics and validating their project ideas through rigorous testing.

With an extensive two-decade career in gaming, Blundell was a key figure at Treyarch and contributed significantly to the Call of Duty Zombies franchise.

After a 13-year tenure at Activision, Blundell co-founded Deviation Games in 2020 alongside Dave Anthony. The studio partnered with PlayStation in 2021 to develop a new AAA game. However, in 2022, Blundell departed Deviation Games, which reportedly reduced its workforce significantly a year later, leading to its closure by March 2024.

Speculation about Dark Outlaw surfaced in May 2024, when former Deviation Games technical director Michael Anthony hinted that the team was engaged in developing a secret project.
