Sony is set to increase the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles and accessories in Japan
Sony has decided to raise the prices of the PlayStation 5 and its peripherals in Japan.
The price adjustments, as detailed in a post on the PlayStation blog, will be effective from September 2.
The price for the standard PlayStation 5 console is set at ¥79,980 ($554), reflecting a $90 increase from the previous price of ¥66,980 ($464).
The digital version is now priced equally at ¥79,980 ($554), showcasing a similar $90 hike from its previous cost of ¥59,980 ($416).
Regarding PlayStation accessories, the DualSense controller's price will range from ¥11,480 ($79) to ¥11,980 ($83), up from ¥9,480 ($66) to ¥9,980 ($69).
The PlayStation Portal's cost will climb from ¥29,980 ($208) to ¥34,980 ($242). Similarly, the price of the PlayStation VR2 headset will rise by $105, moving from ¥74,980 ($519) to ¥89,980 ($624).
The motivation behind these changes is attributed to "the recent challenging external environment" and "current fluctuations in the global economic situation," according to the company.
Last August, there was also a price hike for the PlayStation 5 in Japan due to the "global economic environment."
Sony’s latest financial statement indicates that sales of hardware decreased by 21% to ¥146 billion ($1.01 billion), with 2.4 million PlayStation 5 units sold, down from 3.3 million in the previous year.
