It's important to note that the release of the update coincided with the start of a free weekend for Hunt: Showdown 1896 on Steam. This also contributed to the increase in player count.

However, the recent reviews for Hunt: Showdown 1896 are far from ideal. Only 36% of the latest reviews on Steam are positive. Many players are complaining about the new interface, which they find inconvenient on PC and more suited for consoles.
