The PlayStation 5 has achieved 4 million sales in the UK, taking 31 weeks longer to reach this milestone compared to its predecessor, the PlayStation 4
GfK's recent data discloses that the PlayStation 5 has surpassed four million units sold in the UK.
This makes PS5 the ninth console to reach this milestone in the region. However, it required 31 weeks longer to achieve this compared to its predecessor, the PlayStation 4.
Despite its higher price, PS5 is the fifth-fastest selling console in the UK. For instance, the PlayStation 1, which ranks fourth, was reduced to £129 after 76 weeks and was priced below £100 when it hit four million sales.
In terms of generated revenue, PS5 has outperformed all other consoles at this sales point, amassing nearly £1.85 billion, whereas the PS4 generated £1.26 billion.
The Nintendo Wii remains the fastest console to sell four million units, initially costing £180 and decreasing to £140 after three years. The PS2 trails as the second fastest, debuting at £299, dropping to £199 within 49 weeks, and averaging £165 by the time it sold four million units.
The PS4, ranking third, was priced under £300 when it hit the four-million-unit milestone.
"The old model of consoles being priced nearly at impulse-buy levels is finished," remarks Dorian Bloch, head of GfK games. "Consoles like the Wii, PS1, PS2, and Xbox 360 benefitted from significant price cuts, leading to low average selling prices by the time they sold four million units."
