PlayStation opts out of participating in Gamescom once more

Sony Interactive Entertainment is set to skip this year's Gamescom event in Cologne, according to industry reports.

The gaming giant informed Germany's Games Wirtschaft, and the news was subsequently reported by Video Games Chronicle (VGC), that it will not be present at the annual trade show.

The team at GamesIndustry.biz has sought confirmation from Sony on this matter.

If true, this will be the third straight year PlayStation has not attended Gamescom, having also missed the 2022 and 2023 events. The last time Sony participated in the show was in 2019. In the interim years of 2020 and 2021, the event either did not occur or was held exclusively online due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Sony had also ceased its involvement in E3 as of 2019, a show that never resumed in its physical form thereafter.

Earlier this year, Sony revealed its upcoming 2024 releases during a State of Play digital showcase at the end of May.

Highlighted titles for the latter part of this year include Concord, a new live service multiplayer shooter, PC versions of Until Dawn and God of War Ragnarok, and the first full-length Astro Bot game.

Similarly, Nintendo has also disclosed that it will not join Gamescom 2024. However, Nintendo will be participating in the first-ever Gamescom Latam, slated for next week in São Paulo, Brazil, as reported by GamesMarkt.

Update: PlayStation has confirmed its decision through a spokesperson, who told Eurogamer: "We currently have no plans to exhibit at Gamescom 2024."
