Microsoft is set to release a digital-only version of the Xbox Series X this holiday season, alongside two other new models

This holiday season, Microsoft will introduce three new variants of its Xbox Series consoles, including a fully digital Series X.

The announcement was made during the Xbox Games Showcase, one of the summer's key presentations from gaming publishers.

Sarah Bond, Xbox president, revealed the digital-only white Xbox Series X, which will be priced at $449.99/€499.99. This new model, devoid of a disc drive, will target the market for an all-digital high-end console following recent speculation.

Additionally, a new special edition black Series X with expanded storage of 2TB will be available for $599.99/€649.99, and a white variant of the 1TB Series S, previously sold only in black, will be offered at $349.99/€349.99.

Bond stated that these consoles will debut in selected areas before the year's end. She also confirmed that Microsoft is actively developing the next generation of Xbox consoles.

Further details on availability and regional pricing will be disclosed "in the coming months," with pre-order information, according to an Xbox Wire post.

Initial hints about a digital-only Series X emerged last year from court documents in the Microsoft vs FTC case. These indicated upcoming mid-cycle updates for Xbox consoles, including enhanced functions and a new cylindrical design for the Series X, set for a 2024 launch. It remains to be seen if these features will be included in the models released this year.

Today's event also showcased new games like Gears 6, Doom: The Dark Ages, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and State of Decay 3, along with updates on titles such as Perfect Dark, Fable, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Call of Duty Black Ops 6.

Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated the prices of the 1TB white Series S and the 2TB Series X. This has now been corrected.
