The hype around Banana is explained by its economic aspect. Essentially, nothing happens in Banana. The user simply clicks on an image and watches as the click counter above the banana image changes. However, from time to time, bananas with different skins appear, which can be sold on the Steam marketplace. Most drops sell for just a few cents, but some are priced at over $50. The most expensive offer currently is $1,800 for a special Golden Banana.
However, not all 220,000 users are real people. In an interview with Polygon, one of the authors of Banana revealed that the project is swamped with bots. He estimates that, by the end of last week, only about a third of the users were real. The developers have contacted Valve to resolve this issue together.
