Sony: The PS5 is the company's most profitable console, and service games will be released on PC simultaneously with PlayStation

Sony held a business presentation where they shared updated data on their gaming segment. We selected the key points.

  • Lifetime sales of the PlayStation 5 are $106 billion. It slightly trails behind PlayStation 4 sales ($107 billion), but surpasses all other consoles. PlayStation 3 sales were $71 billion, PlayStation 2 were $44 billion, and the first PlayStation were $24 billion.
  • The operating profit of PlayStation 5 is higher than any other PlayStation console, totaling $10 billion.

  • As of March 31, the monthly active audience of PlayStation Network is 118 million people.
  • As of April 30, the number of monthly active consoles is 97 million. Of these, 49 million are PlayStation 5 consoles, and the same number are PlayStation 4. PlayStation 5 users are more active than those on PlayStation 4, with 2.4 billion hours played versus 1.4 billion hours.

  • In the first four years post-launch, PlayStation 5 users spent 12% less on games than PlayStation 4 users over the same period. However, they spent more on game add-ons (+176%), services (+57%), and peripherals (+34%).

  • From April 2023 to March 2024, 51% of PlayStation Store revenue was generated by major game franchises like Call of Duty and EA Sports FC.
  • Sony plans to release service games on consoles and PC simultaneously, while major narrative games will appear on PC some time after their release on PlayStation. The idea is that the narrative ports should motivate players to buy sequels on PlayStation.
