The British Parliament has supported a bill requiring Apple to allow the installation of apps not from the App Store

The UK authorities have followed the European Union's lead and approved a bill that aims to make the digital platform market more competitive. It specifically targets companies like Apple and its App Store.

The bill states that platform holders may be prohibited from giving preference to their own apps and "engaging in discriminatory policies against certain users." In other words, if the initiative takes effect, Apple will have to allow UK residents to install apps on iOS from sources other than the App Store.

The bill provides for fines of up to 10% of the company's annual turnover for violators.

The Japan Times reports that a similar bill is currently being considered in Japan, which also requires Apple and Google to offer more payment methods in their app stores.
