56.5 million games, 3.3 million PS5s, $5.38 billion in revenue: key takeaways from PlayStation's quarterly report
Sony has published its financial report for the three months ended June 30. Here are the financial highlights for the company’s gaming division, including sales of video games and PlayStation 5.
- According to its latest report, Sony’s Game & Network Services (G&NS) segment reached ¥771.9 billion ($5.38 billion) in revenue, up 28% year-over-year. The growth was driven by sales of hardware and third-party titles, as well as the impact of foreign exchange rates.
- Operating income was ¥49.2 billion ($343 million), down 7% from the same period last year. The main negative factor was the impact of amoratization expense related to Sony’s acquisitions, including Bungie.
- Game sales accounted for 52.6% of quarterly revenue: in-app purchases amounted to $1.47 billion, followed by sales of digital units ($1.06 billion), physical copies ($170 million), and first-party titles sold outside the PlayStation platform ($114.8 million).
- In the first quarter, Sony sold 56.5 million units of PS4 and PS5 games, of which 6.6 million were first-party titles.
- Hardware sales were $1.3 billion, and network services (PS Plus, PS Now, ad revenue) amounted to $868.1 million.
- In the first quarter, Sony sold 3.3 million PS5s, which is up 900k units compared to the same period last year.
- Total PlayStation 5 sales have now reached 41.7 million consoles, a slight increase from the recently reported 40 million milestone.
- PlayStation Network has 108 million monthly active users, flat compared to the previous quarter and up 5 million from Q1 FY22.
