PlayStation CEO: more than $100 million needs to be spent on the development and launch of a new IP
New IP’s don’t often appear on Sony consoles. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan explains this with one, but significant reason — it’s expensive.
In an interview with GQ, Ryan said that for the entire existence of the PS4, only four fresh franchises have been released on the console. These are Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, Death Stranding and Ghost Of Tsushima. All because the creation of such games is too risky for the company.
Today, the development and launch of a new IP costs over $100 million. Therefore, it is very important that big-budget games can collect a good box office.

Ryan also admitted that Sony has even created a separate department that analyzes the gaming portfolio. He looks at how things are going with “old” franchises like God Of War or Uncharted, and how the “newcomers” show themselves.
In September, Sony confirmed that individual games on its consoles will now be sold at a higher price — $70. As stated by some developers (for example, Take-Two), such an increase is justified precisely by the growing costs of game development.
