The future of Steam Spy is in doubt due to restrictions on access to Steam data

The creator of the analytical service Steam Spy Sergey Galenkin told about the problems in the work of the resource. He tweeted about it on the service. According to Galenkin, the collection of up-to-date data is difficult due to the fact that Steam has closed access to users’ game libraries.

This deprives Steam Spy of the main source of information.

According to Sergey Galenkin, the data remaining in the access can be used for analysis, but the work will take longer, and the result will be less accurate.

Galenkin added that he plans to save the Steam Spy database and leave it available as an archive.

The Steam administration has not officially announced the closure of access to game libraries, but on April 10, a post appeared on the official blog about expanding privacy settings to protect user data.

Why Steam closed access to data

Answering questions from Twitter users, Galenkin noted that Steam has increased data privacy at the request of users.

There is a possibility that Steam went for it after the scandal with the leakage of user data on the social network Facebook.

As a result of this incident, the founder of Facebook was forced to justify himself in the US Senate and admit his responsibility for what happened.

About Steam Spy

The service has been in existence since 2015. Steam Spy was a popular tool for approximate sales estimates on the largest trading platform for the sale of digital copies of games.

The assessment was based on information about which products Steam users own. According to Sergey Galenkin, the error of the service algorithms was no more than 10%.
