Sony has sold over 1 million PlayStation VR
Sales of the PlayStation VR virtual reality headset exceeded 1 million sets, according to Reuters, citing the head of the Japanese branch of the company.
According to Atsushi Morita, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia, the commercial success of PlayStation VR “exceeded our expectations.”
Morita also said that the company is increasing production to avoid a shortage of devices on the market.
Atsushi Morita added that he considers VR technology to be a major breakthrough comparable to the invention of television.
“Virtual reality allows us to see with our own eyes anywhere in the world without leaving home. It looks like a time machine or a door leading anywhere,” the businessman added.
The VR headset for PlayStation 4 beats the competition with a price of $399, while the Oculus Rift costs $599, and the HTC Vive sells for $799.
In terms of sales, PlayStation VR is outpaced only by budget Samsung Gear VR headsets using a smartphone as a basis.
