Genre preferences of Russians are close to both Asian and European players at once
How similar are the leading mobile markets to each other, – analysts of the Japanese company Metaps found out.
The study was conducted as follows. Analysts selected 12 major mobile markets (including Russia) and compared their cash Google Play top 100. The comparison itself, conducted in pairs, went in several steps. First, it was determined whether the markets have common applications. Secondly, genres that are popular in both markets were studied and compared. The logic was as follows: if there are no common applications in the tops, the markets are perceived as dissimilar. In the opposite case, the markets, respectively, have similarities.

Similar Markets (by application)
The main “paired” markets were:
- USA – Canada: the only two stores that are practically identical in content to each other.
- Taiwan – Hong Kong: regions with similar culture and language, located only 500 miles apart from each other. Unsurprisingly, their tops turned out to be similar.
- France – Germany: it is not the similarity of the interests of these countries that is curious, but the fact that the UK, which also belongs to the Old World, is much closer to the USA and Canada in its preferences.
The most unique markets (by application)
The tops of Japan and Korea were among the main unique ones, which not only differ greatly from the other ten, but also have almost nothing in common with each other.
It’s funny that if you compare not the tops 100, but the tops 10 and 50, the similarities increase, but mainly between European and American markets, but Asian and, attention, Russian stand apart.
The most similar and dissimilar markets (by genre)
Everything is very strange with Russia in general. If you look at the genres that are in the greatest demand among us (within the box office), then Russia is immediately very close: France, Germany, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
In other words, if, for example, Canada is close to the USA, and the UK has a lot of similarities with Brazil within the genre preferences, then Russia and similar countries have more and the difference between them is more significant.
The most popular genres
The USA and Canada are exceptional in that in these countries 20% of all applications in cash desks are gambling. This is significantly more than anywhere else.
In Japan and Korea, the most popular genre is role-playing games. They have 30% of the cash register behind them (in the USA and Canada, only 6% are behind similar projects).
Casual games are the most popular in the UK and Brazil.
Strategies are leading in Russia, Germany, France, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Moreover, in Russia, such projects in the cash register account for 40% of the total number of applications.
