The author of Canabalt is developing a casual XCOM
Adam Saltsman, who essentially invented the runner genre, is preparing a new game for release – the turn-based tactics of Overland.
In fact, the existence of a project with this name has been known for quite a long time. About a year ago, Adam and his wife Rebecca founded (in fact, restarted their business) Finji company, an independent studio and part-time publisher of indie projects. At the same time, the company announced work on three games at once, one of which was Overland.
Only now it became known about what the game will be like only the other day.
Our colleagues from Pocket Tactics took a short interview with Zaltsman, who told us that the novelty is a turn-based tactical game.
The novelty can be described as a synthesis of XCOM and FTL, which everyone can play: “The gospel of turn-based games that you can preach to the masses.”
“I am a fan of Final Fantasy Tactics and XCOM and I believe that there is a real audience that does not play such projects only because of the huge number of menus and statistics. It’s not a quibble, I love these things, but my thought is what will happen if you take XCOM and turn it into something convenient,” says Adam.
The idea, according to him, is not to make the game simple, but to make alternative ways and consequences of the decisions made crystal clear. Cause and effect in the game should not cause questions, because the interface is as simple as possible.
The situation with HP is given as an example in the interview. It’s not in the game. The characters are either alive, dying, or dead.
Whether Adam will be able to make tactics for the masses – we will not know until this summer.
