Rovio tried to buy Ironhide
In January last year, Rovio made an offer to the authors of Kingdom Rush. However, the Uruguayans refused to join the Angry Birds empire.
Recently, against the background of high-profile multibillion-dollar deals, a very interesting material about the independent Uruguayan studio Ironhide, responsible for the creation of the Kingdom Rush series, was released on the English-language industrial resource Polygon.
We strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with it, the benefit is read in one breath. But, at the same time, we cannot mention several important points mentioned in it.
Firstly, it is Rovio’s intention to acquire Ironhide in January 2013. Then the Uruguayans came to Helsinki in the hope that Rovio would publish them, and received a takeover offer. As such, there were no negotiations. The Uruguayans asked for time to “think” and, in the end, refused.
Why? They didn’t want to become hired employees again.
Another interesting point: long before that, after the release of the original flash version of Kingdom Rush in 2011, they were offered a “job for hire” by Warner Bros. and LucasArts. For developers who grew up on “Star Wars” and “The Lord of the Rings” (it was on these franchises that they were offered to work) – it was a huge temptation. But even then they resisted.
They justified their refusal as follows: many developers are working on these titles in order to then do their own projects, so why would they take up work on someone else’s IP if they can continue working on their own game?
And today, Ironhide does not regret their decisions, they themselves have become a recognizable brand, the second part of Kingdom Rush, like the first, has become a hit. They expect the same from the third one, which should be released this fall.
