Rumors confirmed: Microsoft buys Mojang for $2.5 billion

We didn’t believe it, but in vain. The Mojang team confirmed in its official blog that Microsoft is buying it.

The main reason sounds like this: Notch (Markus Persson) never aspired to Minecraft becoming such a big project. And at a certain stage, he decided that he did not want to be responsible for a company of great importance in the world market. In addition, the project took too much time and effort from him: he did not have the opportunity to work at full strength on new games. He considered the sale of the company with the project the best solution.

Microsoft was chosen as the buyer for one simple reason. While working on the Xbox version of the game in 2012, the team was “so impressed” by Microsoft’s attitude to their project.

The founders of Mojang (Notch, Carl and Jakob) will leave the walls of the company after the completion of the transaction.

The transaction amount is $2.5 billion.
